Wisconsin Edtech Startups 2026: Madison’s Small but Real Cluster

June 1, 2021
BEST WISCONSIN COMPANIES AND STARTUPS

Madison’s edtech cluster is modest by national standards but has a handful of established, revenue-generating companies rather than a wave of unproven startups.

Madison’s Edtech Companies

Education Analytics conducts research and builds analytics tools that help school districts and partners make better decisions on policy and programs. Filament Games is a video game production studio that exclusively builds educational and serious games, including AR/VR titles. Sonic Foundry provides video capture, management, and webcasting tools used across education, business, and government. Magna Publications runs online seminars, publications, and conferences for the education sector.

A Newer Entrant

EduReality, co-founded by UW-Madison alumni Clayton Custer and Taylor Waddell, uses virtual reality for STEAM education and technical training, offering simulations designed for immersive learning — one of the newer companies in the local cluster.

Where the Cluster Stands

Madison’s top three edtech startups have collectively raised more than $7.8 million, and the city ranks roughly #93 globally in startup ecosystem trackers for the edtech industry — a reminder that Wisconsin’s edtech scene, while real, is not yet a major national hub.
