Dr. Oden L. Warren was the President and Chief Technology Officer at Hysitron, Inc. He received his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry in 1993 from Iowa State University of Science & Technology, where he studied as an Amoco Foundation Fellow. His graduate research on surface crystallography of reconstructed thin films earned him an Alpha Chi Sigma Research Excellence Award. Thereafter, he conducted postdoctoral research at Sandia National Laboratories-New Mexico, and at The University of Western Ontario, in the area of interfacial force microscopy. After joining Hysitron in 1998, he led the development effort for the TriboIndenter® nanomechanical test instrument, the company’s flagship product. In 2005, his concept of a three-dimensional nanomechanical tester received a Nano 50 Award from Nanotech Briefs for the physically realized 3D OmniProbe™ product. He is the Principal Investigator for Phase I (completed successfully in 2005) and Phase II (ongoing) SBIR grants awarded by the US Department of Energy for the development of quantitative nanoindentation in-situ to a transmission electron microscope. He also represents the company in drafting ASTM and ISO standards for instrumented indentation. He has been issued 11 US patents, given more than 30 invited talks, and has co-authored more than 70 papers, on nanomechanics, nanotribology, and surface science. Oden’s papers have been cited over 2500 times with an h-index of 25. In 2015 Oden received Iowa State University’s John V. Atanasoff Discovery Award, awarded to alumni who have significantly advanced scientific knowledge through laboratory accomplishments and/or management. His latest research interests include optimizing feedback-controlled nanoindentation, enhancing the role of nanoindentation in combinatorial materials science, and understanding fundamental deformation mechanisms through quantitative nanoindentation coupled to transmission electron microscopy. Elise Brownell, PhD. has spent the last 32 years in the bio/pharmaceutical arena where she has played key roles in Discovery, Development and Opportunity Assessment to drive innovation. After completing her doctorate, Elise’s career started at SUNY Stony Brook where she made discoveries relating to genetic evolution in the great apes. She continued her interest in comparative molecular biology during her tenure at Frederick Cancer Research Facility where she discovered a gene that is a human counterpart to a gene which, in some lower animal species, can become highly cancerous. Elise expanded her facility with molecular genetics while in various functions at Bayer Healthcare. She played a pivotal role in directing discovery research in the areas of asthma, allergy, and immunology and continued her dedication to innovation by managing extramural collaborations for Bayer’s Biotechnology unit. Her efforts were widely recognized by promotion to Director, Project Management, where she led global cross-functional teams to bring several of Bayer’s biopharmaceuticals from bench to clinic. Her award winning performance at Bayer was followed by becoming a member of the founding team of a venture-backed spin out (Aerovance, Inc), where she became head of project management. During her tenure as Senior Director, Aerovance garnered over $ 60 MUSD, completed six clinical trials in 3.5 years, and built a right-sized matrixed organization. In 2008, she co-founded ZephyrBiotech, LLC, a consulting practice that provides project leadership, management and planning to entrepreneurial life science companies, especially those that are early-stage, venture-backed entities. She is also the publisher of ZephyrScope, a weekly report that distills global investment activity in the life sciences into actionable information. Under her guidance, ZephyrBiotech has completed assignments both domestically and internationally. Elise serves as committee Chair for several organizations including VC Task Force, Women in Consulting and Women in Bio (San Francisco Chapter). She is a highly regarded mentor/advisor for entrepreneurial programs conducted through Astia, UC Berkeley BPlan and the NCI/SBIR Investor Forum. Elise received her MS, MPhil and PhD from Yale University, and her BS from Allegheny College. She is particularly proud of her Preparatory Diploma from Eastman School of Music in piano.

Jenny Lester, MPH, CCRP, is the Research Manager for the Women’s Cancer Program, Prevention and Control, and Survivorship in the Samuel Oschin Comprehensive Cancer Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. She graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science in health promotion and education and then earned her Master of Public Health degree from Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta, Georgia.
