He continues to work toward various commercial and charitable goals. In early 2017, vAtomic Systems became his latest startup. Kunal Modi
Advisor of Lean In
I met my close friend Molly Day during a seminar on social movements in college. Four years later, we launched our own movement to change the world.Throughout college, we debated different models of social change as we encountered diverse challenges and inspiring individuals through courses and campus volunteering. After graduating, I signed up to serve in AmeriCorps in Washington, D.C., while Molly traveled abroad to work with a microfinance NGO. We shared successes and frustrations from our respective experiences, from policy roadblocks to resource shortfalls. We envisioned a new model for social change to re-imagine campus volunteerism and help nonprofits and communities tackle their toughest challenges. With Molly back and my service year wrapping up, we huddled with friends and sketched out campusCATALYST, a program providing social enterprise training for college students and enlisting them in pro bono projects for nonprofits. While I had already accepted a new job, Molly weighed a prestigious offer against the ambitious adventure of building out our budding idea. With no funding or precedent, we were both uncertain of the prospects for success. Taking it on full time represented a big risk for Molly, but was the only hope for the organization to get off the ground. After much debate and discussion, Molly turned down her job offer, took the plunge as a social entrepreneur, and never looked back. Molly became the founding Executive Director of campusCATALYST and we worked together over the next several years to build the organization. During her tenure, the organization engaged over 500 students, expanded programs, and provided pro bono support to more than 100 nonprofit organizations. We were regularly inspired by the students who served and the nonprofits that participated in the program, but one story continues to stand out. Sitting in on a training session, I asked a group of college seniors about their career ambitions and aspirations – one woman simply declared, “I want to be like Molly.” I admire the risk Molly took and the difference she made. I learned that the biggest impact from leaning into your own ambitions may very well be how much it inspires others to lean into theirs. As we consider the challenges confronting our generation, we often find that we are not short on good ideas, but rather, the courage to take risks, follow our passions, and achieve our full potential. Witnessing Molly demonstrate that courage continues to shape my career and fuel my aspiration to make a difference in the world.

I’ll never forget how terrified and unsure I was, standing at that fork in the road. I had worked at the same small literary agency since college and I loved it there; the intimacy of the office and our band of authors made it feel like home from the day I arrived. By the time I turned 30, I bought the agency and renamed it the Writers Shop. I was thrilled by the freedom and independence of owning my own business, and the idea that I could grow and stretch as far as my vision would take me. And for several years, that’s exactly what we did… grow! Then, an unexpected opportunity came my way to sell the company to The William Morris Agency, the largest and oldest agency in the world. Down one path was everything I knew and loved and a home I helped create. I couldn’t see the end of that road, but at least I had a good sense of what it would be like in the near future, and I liked that. The other path was completely unknown to me. Not only could I not see the end of the road, but I couldn’t even see past the first step. On a personal level, the timing was far from ideal: I had two young children at home and a third on the horizon. All I could see was what I could imagine in my head: my distaste for corporate America, the challenges of balancing young children and a new job, and a real concern about losing what was special about our boutique agency. Professionally, I weighed my desire to stay independent with the need to compete and advocate for my clients on a global level. Sure, I was afraid of change and the unknown, but I was more afraid of not taking the opportunity to play (and win!) on a much bigger stage. Ultimately, I took the plunge and never looked back. I arrived with my whole team and we reworked the literary department from the inside out. We brought a feeling of close-knit, family style collaboration, and soon that team spirit grew to encompass our new colleagues too. We learned new ways of looking at our work, and we, in turn, shared our smaller, more intimate perspective. Our clients were enveloped in a world of bigger prospects and more options. Everyone, clients and colleagues alike, benefited enormously from the fit. Within a short period of time, I became the first woman on the board of that century old company and was able to affect change company-wide. I was living my dream, not as I had mapped it in my mind, but as it unfolded in real time, which I’ve discovered is much more effective and satisfying.

Member of the Dean’s Advisory Council of the School of Management of Boston University
Edward J. Zander has spent more than 35 years in the technology sector. He has played a key role in shaping some of the major paradigm shifts in technology that impact the world today. These include the move from mainframes to minicomputers; minicomputers to workstations; PCs to networking and to the Internet; hardware to software; and the revolution in wireless devices and mobility. Ed was most recently chairman of the board and chief executive officer of Motorola. During his four-year tenure, he made the RAZR the best-selling cell phone in history and reshaped Motorola’s image worldwide with the popular “Hello Moto” campaign. He sharpened Motorola’s edge in technology innovation; delivered on 12 consecutive quarters of revenue growth; streamlined the business to increase operating efficiencies worldwide; significantly improved the balance sheet and acquired and divested businesses to strengthen the company’s competitive position. During his tenure, the company doubled its revenue and achieved double digit earnings for the first time in over a decade. Prior to Motorola, Ed was president and chief operating officer of Sun Microsystems until 2002. During his 15 years at the company, he grew Sun to $18 billion in revenues; established the company as number one in the server market; and built it into the pre-eminent supplier of network software infrastructure with Solaris and Java. In addition, Ed was responsible for developing the “dot in dot com” campaign establishing Sun as a leader in Internet computing. Before Sun, Ed worked at Apollo Computer as vice president of marketing and at Data General in a number of marketing and engineering positions. Ed was also managing director at Silver Lake Partners, a leading private equity fund, in 2003, and has served on the board of directors for several technology companies. Today he is a director of Netezza Corp., Seagate and NetSuite. Ed also served as chairman of the Technology CEO Council in Washington D.C. and has been on a number of civic and philanthropic boards. Ed is a member of the Board of Trustees at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council of the School of Management at Boston University. Ed received an undergraduate degree in electrical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and a master’s degree in business administration as well as an honorary Ph.D. from Boston University.
