Ricardo is a technologist at heart and a believer in the importance of simplicity and good design in any product. He is also a caffeine junkie. Ricardo received the B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Engineering Faculty of Porto University (FEUP), Portugal in 2001, the M.S. degree in Computer Science from University of California, Los Angeles in 2005, and the PhD degree in Computer Science from UCLA in 2009. During his PhD he did several internships, including AT&T Labs, Thomson and Juniper Networks in Silicon Valley. During his PhD he developed research in inter-domain routing, network security and Internet topology. He is the main author of several patents and dozens of papers in international conferences and journals, including ACM SIGCOMM, ACM SIGMETRICS and IEEE Transactions on Networking. He is a member of the ACM and the IEEE. In 2009 he was the recipient of the Cisco Outstanding Graduate Student Research Award and the Edward K. Rice Outstanding Doctoral Student Award.

Stephen Dawson-Haggerty is a 5th-year Ph.D. student in the LoCal group working on data collection architecture and infrastructure for a future where time series data from transducers is ubiquitous. He has a background in embedded sensing and networking, conducting large-scale deployments of wireless sensors in (and on) forests, volcanos, and currently commercial buildings. He is the principle developer of blip, the low-power IPv6 networking stack for the TinyOS operating system.
