Fintech is Atlanta’s signature sector, and it’s not close: fintech accounts for 28% of the city’s funding activity, building on Atlanta’s decades-long legacy as a payments processing hub. Only Information Technology Services, with 33 funded companies, outpaces fintech’s 14 in raw company count — but fintech pulls in a disproportionate share of dollars.
The scale of Atlanta’s advantage
Atlanta raised more venture capital in 2025 than Miami, Charlotte, and Nashville combined. The city now supports more than 50 active seed funds and over 20 Series A investors, with average seed rounds around $2.8 million and Series A rounds landing in the $10–18 million range. Most of that activity is concentrated in Buckhead and Midtown, with Technology Square near Georgia Tech emerging as a newer cluster.
What gets funded — and what doesn’t
Payments and embedded finance remain the easiest categories to raise for in Atlanta, a direct legacy of the city’s history as home to major payment processors. Crypto and DeFi startups have a harder time here without a clear regulatory compliance path. Local investors with a track record include TechSquare Labs, which backed Kabbage at the $2 million seed stage before its $1.2 billion exit to American Express, Engage Ventures, which led Greenlight’s $54 million Series B, and Panoramic Ventures, an early backer of Roadie before its acquisition by UPS.
