Essential Signs Your Parking Garage Needs

As you’re designing, planning, and constructing your parking garage, you should consider several key factors. One of the most important factors that contribute to the success of your garage is its signage. Having the right signage will ensure your parking garage complies with legal requirements and attracts new customers. Here are some examples of the most essential signs your parking garage needs.

Handicap Parking Signs

All public buildings and businesses must comply with the Americans With Disabilities Act, also known as ADA regulations. ADA parking guidelines require parking lots, garages, and structures to provide accessible parking spots for patrons with disabilities. You must also mark these spots with special signage, which is where handicap parking signage comes in. These signs usually read “Reserved Parking” and display a universal handicap icon. These signs let patrons know who is permitted to park in these spaces.

Navigational Signs

Navigational signs are extremely important to place throughout your parking garage. Some parking garages have low lighting, which makes them difficult to navigate. Directional signage is crucial to maintaining an even traffic flow and preventing accidents. Include signs that display the floor number, the directions to the exits, and the flow of traffic. Additionally, if you utilize robotic or automated parking technology in your structure, use signage to direct traffic to your valet parking location where patrons can drop off their vehicles.

Time Limit Parking Signs

Depending on your parking rates and time limits, you may want to place signage in your garage to notify your customers of time limits. Place these signs near entrances and payment areas so that customers are aware of their time limits before they leave your garage. This helps keep all parties informed and prevents headaches for both your customers and your management.

Outdoor Signage

Don’t just limit your parking garage’s signage to inside the building alone. Place eye-catching promotional signage outside your building as well to attract potential customers. Patrons don’t often have much time to decide on a parking structure while driving, so utilize large, well-lit signage that is easily visible from the road. This will help your parking structure stand out from the competition, especially if your garage is in a big city with lots of surrounding parking options.

Remember these examples of essential parking garage signage as you design your parking garage. Prioritize your signage when you fix up your parking structure in the future. As soon as your signage starts to look dull, swap it out to ensure easy legibility.
