Dennis McKenna
Co-Founder, Exec Chairman of e.Republic
Dennis is CEO and co-founder of e.Republic. Established in 1984, it is the leading media company focused on state and local government and education. Dennis oversees strategy and business development for the firm and is responsible for its market-leading print and digital publishing, business intelligence, and integrated media. A pioneer in the field, Dennis is a trusted advisor to both public- and private-sector leaders in the United States and internationally. Under his leadership, e.Republic’s award-winning publications, websites, over 200 events and highly respected research operations are acknowledged as setting the gold standard in their respective fields. The firm’s work is regularly cited in national outlets, including The New York Times, Forbes, Time Magazine, The Washington Post and USA Today. In 1985, Dennis developed and published California County magazine in partnership with the California State Association of Counties. In 1987, as one of the first to recognize the impact new digital technologies were to have on the public sector, Dennis launched Government Technology, the first national magazine covering information technology in state and local government. Government Technology was followed with the development of other successful media platforms, including Public CIO and Emergency Management. All are recipients of numerous editorial and design awards–with Emergency Management in 2013 and Public CIO in 2009–named “Magazine of the Year” by the American Society of Business Publication Editors (ASBPE) and Government Technology and Emergency Management named as best publications in their respective categories for the last three years (2011-13) at the Western Publishing Association’s Maggie awards. Seeing the need for stronger analysis and research to support public sector innovation, Dennis developed and oversees management of the Center for Digital Government – the first of its kind research and business intelligence advisory focused exclusively on state and local government. The Center is home to the widely cited Digital States Survey and Digital Government Navigator, a subscription-based market intelligence tool for companies targeting public sector business. In 2009, e.Republic acquired Governing from Congressional Quarterly. Governing is the nation’s leading media platform covering politics, policy and management for state and local government leaders. Since the acquisition, Dennis has brought on former Kansas City Mayor Mark Funkhouser as Publisher and broadened Governing’s offerings – building out its online presence, establishing the Governing Institute and greatly expanding its national events portfolio. In 2011, Governing received the prestigious Jesse H. Neal Award from American Business Media for exceptional editorial content. In 2014, Dennis launched two new initiatives, e.Republic Labs and e.Republic Ventures. Designed to link state and local government to a new generation of innovative civic-tech solutions, e.Republic Labs serves as a catalyst and connector for the development, deployment and scalability of a new generation of government and civic technologies. e.Republic Ventures provides mentorship and capital for a select number of early stage companies to accelerate their entry into the public sector market. Dennis also acquired the regional tech business website Techwire in 2014 and relaunched it as a subscription based news and business intelligence service focused on the nexus of business, technology and public policy in California. Dennis has served as an advisor to the Education Commission of the States to help develop effective strategies for use of information technology in education and was a board member of the Information Technology Association of America’s subcommittee on state and local government. Dennis served as chair of the Technology Task Force for Governor Pete Wilson’s California Mentoring Initiative, serving on the governor’s team representing the state of California at the Presidents’ Summit for America’s Future held in Philadelphia in 1997. As a speaker, Dennis has addressed national and international organizations, including the National Governors Association, National Conference of State Legislatures, Little Hoover Commission and Education Commission of the States. He is recognized by FOLIO as one of the most influential people in magazine media and by BtoB Media Business’s “Who’s Who in Business Publishing.”

Whit Hanks
Co-Founder, CFO of Whim Hospitality
A consummate businessman, entrepreneur, husband, father and true Austin native, Whit’s family history is rooted in the city and state of Texas. A former real estate developer and antique dealer, Whit had fun importing a church from Vietnam on a lark, decided to set it up on his parents’ weekend place in Dripping Springs, met Kim and the rest is history. Whit works for fun, generally about 60 hours a week! He enjoys tennis, hiking, photography, and spending a lot of time with his wife. They love to travel to places they have never been, often gathering inspiration and goods to enhance the company’s offerings. Together the couple has 5 children and four dogs. While Whit has had a long, colorful career, it is this phase of his life in the hospitality industry where he is able to positively impact the lives of so many people — employees and guests–in a positive way, helping make their dreams come true. He’s really enjoying this chapter of his life. Unofficial title – Kim’s Handler.

A lover of all things living, Kim has always been interested in zoology and television broadcasting and dreamt of becoming the next Jack Hannah or Crocodile Hunter. Kim’s path to the hospitality industry was a serendipitous one, taking her from years at a Biotech to a world where she could help bring families together for their most important celebrations. For Kim, nothing is more thrilling than wrangling 300 guests in the unpredictable Texas weather. She loves hiking with Whit and their two dogs, white water rafting and fly fishing with her family and traveling the world. She and her sons love the movies and have been known to dabble in karaoke shows too. One of her best-kept secrets is her ability to spot a good bargain. She buys all of her designer clothes on eBay because she loves buying second hand. Unofficial title – “Jazz Hands Experience Creator.”

Matt Mastrangelo
Founder / CEO of Groupmatics
After a nearly decade-long career with two professional sports teams, Matt Mastrangelo launched Groupmatics with an approach that blends an inside group sales perspective with a true love of sporting events. Working in the group sales department, Matt recognized the amount of work, responsibility, and hassle that was placed on both the Group Sales Rep and a Group Leader to manage a group outing. He also saw the inefficiencies of the group sales process and realized that teams were losing opportunities for return revenue due to poor process experiences of the buyers. Matt started his career in the ticket sales department with the Cleveland Indians in 2005. In 2006 he was promoted to the role of Group Sales Account Executive, where he worked very closely with non-profit organizations, youth baseball leagues, churches, unions, and corporations to organize group outings ranging from 25 to 5,000+ people. Matt became Group Sales Manager for the Cleveland Browns in 2010. After only two years with the Browns, Matt and his staff grew the group ticket business by a whopping 800%. The NFL recently honored the Cleveland Browns Group Sales department as a best practice for this accomplishment. Matt received his Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) in Communications from Cleveland State University. He currently resides in Cleveland, Ohio with his beautiful wife Nicole, son Anthony and daughter CeCe. He hopes Groupmatics puts the fun back in group ticketing processes for teams and groups across America.
