Ely Sachs
Co-Founder of Desktop Metal
Emanuel “Ely” Sachs, a pioneer of 3D printing, is the inventor of binder jet printing and a co-founder of Desktop Metal, a company committed to accelerating the transformation of manufacturing with end-to-end metal 3D printing solutions. Prof. Sachs is also a professor of mechanical engineering at MIT. Founded in 2015 by leaders in advanced manufacturing, materials science, and robotics, Desktop Metal is addressing the unmet challenges of speed, cost, and quality to make metal 3D printing an essential tool for engineers and manufacturers around the world. As a visionary and inventor of the MIT 3D printing process and binder jet printing, Prof. Sachs has played a key role in the development of Desktop Metal’s mass production system, which builds metal parts in a matter of minutes instead of hours with high precision, single-pass technology. At MIT beginning in the late 1980s, Prof. Sachs became a visionary in rapid prototyping. With colleagues, he developed the concept of 3D printing, ultimately allowing engineers to create functional parts rather than models or patterns for prototyping and testing, as well as for creating finished product components. 3D printing technology has since been applied to a wide variety of systems and application areas including metal end-use parts. His work in this area yielded more than 40 patents and launched a brand new industry. Prof. Sachs became a member of the MIT faculty in 1986. In addition to 3D Printing, Prof Sachs is also known for his invention of conformal cooled molds and contributions to the manufacturing of photovoltaics, particularly for the invention of processes which make silicon wafers directly from molten silicon with no sawing required. He has co-founded several companies in this field including 1366 Technologies Inc, of Bedford, MA. He is also known for his work on process control of microelectronic manufacturing. He has been recognized for pioneering new approaches to teaching undergraduate education, focusing on active, hands-on participation by students in the discovery of knowledge. Sachs’ numerous honors and awards include membership in the National Academy of Engineering, the Ruth and Joel Spira Award for Distinguished Teaching in 1995; the Institute of Corrosion’s T.P. Hoar Award in 2001; the R&D 100 Award in 2004; and the TMS Champion H. Mathewson Award in 2006. Sachs earned his SB, MS and Ph.D., all in mechanical engineering and all from MIT. He has authored more than 110 technical papers and holds more than 55 patents.

Maxim Lobovsky
Co-Founder and CEO of Formlabs
Maxim Lobovsky launched a successful career as an entrepreneur and startup founder by age 25. As a Program in Media Arts and Sciences master’s student at MIT’s Media Lab, Lobovsky enjoyed access to three-dimensional printers to create necessary components for his projects, designed and printed to spec. Lobovsky could see the potential applications of 3D printing for designers, architects, engineers, and other small businesses;however, the machines he used were prohibitively expensive. After graduating, Lobovsky worked with two of his friends to create the first small-scale, affordable 3D printer for “prosumers,” or professional consumers, and thus was born his startup, Formlabs. Once they had a prototype, called the Form 1, Lobovsky and Formlabs’ co-founders began a Kickstarter campaign, using the power of crowdsourced funding to finance the production of commercial models. Formlabs raised more than $1 million in a week, and nearly $3 million overall—30 times their original fundraising goal. The Form 1 is compatible with CAD software, and uses stereolithography technology to print layers as thin as .001 inches.

Bob Young is the founder and CEO of Lulu.com, a premiere international marketplace for new digital content on the Internet, with more than 300,000 recently published titles and more than 15,000 new creators from 80 different countries joining each week. Lulu.com, founded in 2002, is Young’s most recent endeavour. The success of this company has earned Young notable recognition; he was named one of the “Top 50 Agenda-Setters in the Technology Industry in 2006” and was ranked as the fourth “Top Entrepreneur for 2006,” both by Silicon.com. In 1993, Young co-founded Red Hat (NYSE: RHT), the open-source software company that gives hardware and software vendors a standard platform on which to certify their technology. Red Hat is a Fortune 500 company and chief rival to Microsoft. His success at Red Hat won him industry accolades, including nomination as one of Business Week’s “Top Entrepreneurs” in 1999. Before founding Red Hat, Young spent 20 years at the helm of two computer-leasing companies that he founded. His experiences as a high tech entrepreneur combined with his innate marketing savvy led to Red Hat’s success. His book, “Under the Radar”, chronicles how Red Hat’s open source strategy successfully won wide industry acceptance in a market previously dominated by proprietary binary-only systems. Young has also imparted the lessons learned from his entrepreneurial experiences through his contributions to the books to “You’ve GOT to Read This Book!” and “Chicken Soup for the Entrepreneur’s Soul.” In 2000, Young co-founded the Center for Public Domain, a non-profit foundation created to bolster healthy conversation of intellectual property, patent and copyright law, and the management of the public domain for the common good. Grant recipients included the Electronic Frontier Foundation, the Creative Commons, the Free Software Foundation, and the Future of Music Coalition. Young graduated from the University of Toronto in 1976 prior to beginning his career in the computer finance arena. In 2003, Young purchased the Hamilton Tiger-Cats of the Canadian Football League and currently serves as the league’s vice chairman. In addition to enjoying fly fishing, Young collects calculators and antique typewriters, a nod to his beginnings as a typewriter salesman and can usually be found sporting a pair of red socks. However, instead of red on his head, Young now tips his orange hat.

Jordan Schindler
Founder & CEO of Nufabrx
I founded texdel (formerly Nufabrx) in 2011 after a trip to the dermatologist where I learned that pillowcases are one of the leading causes of acne/blemishes, and we are supposed to wash our pillowcases every 2 to 3 days. For teens and college students, this is not going to happen! So off I went to find a solution. After years of R&D, fine tuning and teaming up with a brilliant PhD formulation scientist from Minneapolis, we developed four patent-pending “platform” technologies that enable the secure and controlled delivery of “Active” ingredients via yarn to the skin over an extended period of time, and through hundreds of laundering cycles. Textile yarns can now be enhanced to provide the wearer performance improving, healing, and aesthetic capabilities. Textile-Based Delivery is proud to partner with one of the most innovative and proven yarn manufacturers in America.
