Madison has quietly built one of the Midwest’s strongest biotech clusters, anchored by University of Wisconsin–Madison research funding that tops $1 billion a year — putting UW-Madison among the top ten universities nationwide for federal research dollars.

A $100 million state bet

A new $100 million fund combining state and private capital is aimed squarely at helping Wisconsin biotech companies get off the ground and cementing the state’s position as a biohealth hub. BioForward Wisconsin coordinates much of the ecosystem support, providing incubation services, clinical trial access, and commercialization help for early-stage companies.

Fresh cohort, February 2026

Forward BIOLABS, working with BioForward Wisconsin, announced in February 2026 that eighteen emerging biohealth companies across the state were selected for Innovation to Commercialization Pipeline (ICP) awards. The awardees span biomanufacturing, diagnostics, life sciences, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, and radiopharmaceuticals — a broad cross-section of the state’s biohealth strengths rather than a single niche.

Established Madison names in the space include Centrose, which develops therapeutics targeting disease-related cells, and FluGen, a biopharmaceutical company focused on preventing and treating seasonal and pandemic influenza.
