Chiu has focused on expanding the presentation of contemporary art while building a new collection of photography and video, including major acquisitions by Nam June Paik, Yoko Ono, Mariko Mori and Yang Fudong for the Asia Society Museum. An effective and creative fundraiser, Chiu secured about 80 percent of the Asia Society Museum’s budget through gifts from individuals and foundations and new fundraising initiatives such as the Contemporary Art Council, which was established five years ago and now supports the contemporary art exhibition program with funds and donations of artworks. Chiu also commissioned groundbreaking international loan exhibitions devoted to modern art, including first-time presentations of Iran’s pre-revolutionary period “Iran Modern” (2013) and “Art and China’s Revolution” (2008), the first exhibition to focus on the art of China’s Cultural Revolution. She led the opening exhibitions and programs for two new Asia Society buildings in Hong Kong and Houston that opened in 2012. Most recently, she created a series of cultural dialogues between museum leaders in China, India and the United States, such as the U.S.-China Museum Directors Forum in Beijing, which resulted in her co-editing the report “Toward a New Phase of U.S.-China Museum Collaborations” (2013). Chiu has been an executive committee and board member of the Association of Art Museum Directors (2008–2012), a board member of The American Alliance of Museums (2010–2013) and sat on numerous committees, including the U.S. Praemium Imperiale, Academic Committee for the Shanghai Biennale and Bellagio Creative Arts Fellowship for the Rockefeller Foundation. Before joining the Asia Society, Chiu was the founding director of the Asia-Australia Arts Centre in Sydney from 1996 until 2001 when she moved to New York. The Centre was housed in a renovated historic building and supported by a combination of private and government funds. Chiu organized exhibits, including displays of newly commissioned works, and created evening programs of video art and performances to attract younger visitors. From 1993 to 1996, Chiu was the curator for the University of Western Sydney Collection at the University of Western Sydney where she organized exhibitions and built a collection of contemporary Australian art. A native of Australia, Chiu earned her bachelor’s degree in 1992 at the University of Western Sydney in art history and criticism and her master’s in arts administration in 1994 from the College of Fine Arts at University of New South Wales. She completed her Ph.D. with a dissertation on experimental Chinese art at the University of Western Sydney in 2005. Chiu has authored and edited several books and catalogs on contemporary art, including Contemporary Art in Asia: A Critical Reader (MIT Press, 2010), lectured at Harvard, Yale, Columbia, the Museum of Modern Art and other universities and museums.

John Gray
Director of Smithsonian Institution
John Gray, founding president of the Autry National Center of the American West, a consolidation of three cultural organizations in Los Angeles and Denver, has been appointed the Elizabeth MacMillan Director of the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, effective July 23. Gray was known for his leadership in banking and government service until he became director of the Autry Museum of Western Heritage in Los Angeles. He enlarged the museum’s mission and scope, and, in 2002, merged the museum with Colorado’s Women of the West Museum and, in 2004, with Los Angeles’ oldest museum, the Southwest Museum of the American Indian. The new organization became the Autry National Center of the American West based in Los Angeles. “John comes to the Museum of American History with a track record of transforming the organizations he has led,” said Richard Kurin, head of the search committee and Under Secretary for History, Art and Culture at the Smithsonian. “He took a museum of the American West, including the collections of Gene Autry and transformed it into an institution representing a broader, inclusive and complicated vision of the American West. He enlisted outstanding scholars, supported serious research and exhibitions, and robust educational activities.” “Anyone who knows museums will know that this was a great accomplishment, supported by an expanded Board of Trustees and a large capital campaign spearheaded by John,” Kurin added. “He is enthusiastic and intellectually curious and supportive of scholarly research that serves the public programs—exactly the traits we wanted for a director of our American History Museum on the National Mall.” The Autry National Center has more than 500,000 objects, a 130-member staff and an annual budget of about $16 million. It is accredited by the American Association of Museums and gained national prominence during Gray’s tenure. Gray spent 25 years in commercial banking, serving as executive vice president of First Interstate Bank of California in Los Angeles from 1987 until 1996. He worked for the Small Business Administration in Washington, D.C., for two years, 1997 to 1999—when he moved back to the West Coast to serve as president and CEO of the Autry Museum in Los Angeles. This was the beginning of his career in non-profit cultural organizations, which culminated in the creation of the Autry National Center of the American West, formed by the merger of three organizations. He retired from the Autry National Center in late 2010 and currently lives in New Mexico. Gray has a bachelor’s degree from C.W. Post College at Long Island University and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Colorado. He is currently enrolled in the master’s program in Eastern classics from Saint John’s College in Santa Fe.“It is a great honor to be selected as steward of our national treasures,” said Gray. “Learning and understanding our shared histories as Americans are vital to living in and developing the American experience.” Smithsonian Secretary Wayne Clough said, “John pulled together three organizations with different missions, leadership and boards, to form one new center whose mission is to tell the story of the American West as a place created by cowboys, Native Americans, women, Chinese laborers, Mexicans and many others. His passion for American history and scholarship is obvious, and it’s what will make him a great leader for our American History Museum.” Clough made the appointment based on recommendations made by a search committee chaired by Kurin that included American History Museum board chair John Rogers; vice chair Nick Taubman; board member and former Smithsonian Regent Rep. Doris Matsui (D-Calif.); museum staff members Judith Gradwohl, Marvette Perez and Jeffrey Stine; National Museum of African American History and Culture director Lonnie Bunch; the Smithsonian’s director of advancement Ginny Clark; and Nina Archabal, former director of the Minnesota Historical Society. Gray succeeds Brent Glass, who retired as director in August 2011. Marc Pachter, former director of the Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery, has served as interim director since last August. Gray will oversee 234 employees, a budget of more than $34 million and the renewal of the museum’s 120,000-square-foot west exhibition wing with its new exhibit spaces, interior public plazas, a Hall of Music for live performances, a modern education center and a gallery for the Lemelson Center for the Study of Invention and Innovation. Pachter has overseen the opening of eight exhibitions, new public programs and record-breaking attendance (the museum is on target for 5 million visitors this year). The exhibitions included “September 11: Remembrance and Reflection,” which provided visitors with an intimate view of more than 50 objects from the three sites and was visited by 13,000 people in 11 days; “Jefferson’s Bible: The Life and Morals of Jesus of Nazareth”; a new “The First Ladies” exhibition; and “American Stories,” with historical and popular-culture icons. He also created small, temporary exhibits and children’s play areas to enliven the visitor experience. Special projects included experimental sound recordings of Alexander Graham Bell in partnership with the Library of Congress and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory as well as the opening of the Warner Bros. Theater. The National Museum of American History collects, preserves and displays American heritage in the areas of social, political, cultural, scientific and military history. It also houses a special gallery devoted to African American history for the new National Museum of African American History and Culture while that building is under construction.

Robert Koestler
Director of Smithsonian Institution
Robert J. Koestler has been director of the Smithsonian’s Museum Conservation Institute since August 2004. As director, he strives to bring new technology and focus to MCI’s research and conservation efforts, working closely with the Smithsonian museums to protect and conserve their collections. His more than 30 years of museum experience include nearly 24 years at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art and eight years at the American Museum of Natural History, where he concentrated on the scientific research of art objects and natural history collections. Koestler is known for his advances in art conservation research and practice, including quantification and early detection of biodeterioration; assessment of visual changes in material surfaces; and control of insect and fungal infestations in objects. He developed a specialized method for eradicating these damaging organism infestations without harming the artwork or exposing conservators to dangerous chemicals; he has used this method to treat thousands of objects throughout the world. A cell biologist and electron microscopist, Koestler helped conservators at the Metropolitan Museum of Art evaluate works of art at the microscopic level. At the American Museum of Natural History, he managed a scanning electron microscope facility specializing in the study of biological specimens, and he used his expertise to contribute to museum exhibits and publications. He also has consulted on many projects worldwide for foundations, museums, collections and government conservation institutes. Koestler has served as an adjunct professor for New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts Conservation Center. He has appeared on the PBS program “Innovation” and the BBC’s “Nova” and was featured in an April 2004 Nature article. He has been editor of the Elsevier journal International Biodeterioration and Biodegradation since 1994 and editor-in-chief since 2006. Koestler earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from the State University of New York at Stony Brook in 1972 and two master’s degrees in 1977 and 1983 from Hunter College and the City University of New York, respectively, as well as a doctorate degree in cell biology and electron microscopy from the City University in 1985.

The forum was entitled “Restarting Denver’s Economic Engine” and focused on issues concerning regional economic development.
