Pennsylvania Healthcare Startups 2026: Inside Cellicon Valley

Philadelphia has earned the nickname “Cellicon Valley,” and the numbers back it up: the city hosts roughly 60 of the world’s 500 cell-and-gene therapy companies, a concentration unmatched outside of Boston and the Bay Area.

The big bets

State backing behind the boom

Governor Josh Shapiro’s 2026-27 state budget includes $125 million to launch Innovate in PA 2.0, a program funding promising Pennsylvania startups. Shapiro announced the initiative at B+labs, a life-sciences incubator in Philadelphia’s Schuylkill Yards offering wet and dry chemistry labs and shared research equipment. Pennsylvania’s broader startup ecosystem tracks 152 funded companies across 52 cities, with Philadelphia and Pittsburgh anchoring the majority of activity — but it’s the cell-and-gene therapy cluster that gives the state its clearest national identity in healthcare.
