Frequently Asked Questions
What is Zoox and how does its robotaxi service work?
Zoox is an autonomous vehicle company owned by Amazon that has developed a purpose-built robotaxi — a vehicle designed from the ground up for autonomous passenger transport rather than adapted from a conventional car. The Zoox vehicle is bidirectional with no steering wheel, seats four passengers facing each other, and uses a suite of cameras, lidar, and radar sensors to navigate without a human driver.
When did Zoox launch its robotaxi service in Las Vegas?
Zoox launched commercial robotaxi operations in Las Vegas in 2025, expanding beyond its San Francisco testing operations. Las Vegas was selected for its relatively predictable grid street layout, year-round clear weather conditions, and strong tourism demand that provides a natural base of prospective passengers for the service.
How does Zoox compare to Waymo and other robotaxi competitors?
Zoox differentiates through its purpose-built vehicle design optimised for passenger experience, while Waymo uses modified Toyota and Jaguar vehicles. Waymo has a head start in commercial operations and currently serves larger markets. Zoox benefits from Amazon’s logistics expertise and capital, which gives it unique potential to integrate with Amazon’s delivery and last-mile operations.
What safety record does Zoox’s autonomous vehicle system have?
Zoox has accumulated millions of autonomous miles in testing across San Francisco and Las Vegas, with a safety record it claims exceeds human driving statistics on a miles-per-incident basis. The company submits detailed safety reports to regulators and participates in voluntary data sharing programmes to build public and regulatory confidence.
How does Amazon’s ownership affect Zoox’s development and strategy?
Amazon’s ownership gives Zoox access to exceptional engineering talent, virtually unlimited capital, and potential integration with Amazon’s logistics network — creating a unique dual opportunity in both passenger transport and autonomous delivery. Amazon’s long-term investment horizon also allows Zoox to develop its technology without pressure for near-term profitability.
What is the market opportunity for robotaxi services in the US?
The US robotaxi market is projected to reach $45 billion annually by 2030 as autonomous vehicle technology matures and regulatory frameworks solidify. The opportunity spans urban mobility, airport transfers, corporate campuses, and eventually suburban and highway corridors. Companies that establish operational credibility and regulatory relationships now will have significant advantages as the market scales.
